Þingvallavegur (Rt. 36), one of the main roads around the Þingvellir National Park, will be closed to all traffic starting on April 24, 2019. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration will be conducting repairs and maintenance on the road, which is expected remain closed until the fall.
Þingvallavegur will be closed east of the Service Center, although the center itself will remain open and accessible to visitors. As a detour, visitors are directed to take Vallavegur (Rt. 361).
The Road Administration is taking steps to improve Vallavegur before Þingvallavegur is closed, however, visitors are asked to keep in mind that it is a narrow road and not suitable for larger vehicles. As such, while construction is ongoing on Þingvallavegur, tourism operators and self-catering travelers are asked to use smaller cars whenever possible when visiting the national park.
