Ring Road Runners Raise Funds for Cancer Support

Two couples, Signý Gunnarsdóttir and her husband Sveinn Benedikt Rögnvaldsson, and his sister Alma María Rögnvaldsdóttir and her husband Gudmundur Gudnason, embarked on a run around Iceland yesterday to raise funds to support children with cancer.

“We didn’t run one meter without an escort, which was incredible. If this is the encouragement we can expect it won’t be a problem at all,” Gunnarsdóttir told Morgunbladid of the people who ran the first kilometers with them.

Their goal is to run 100 kilometers per day for 15 days. They launched the run at the children’s hospital Barnaspítali Hringsins in Reykjavík at 9:30 yesterday morning and reached Hella at 6:45 yesterday evening—they take turns running.

Today they will run from Hella to Vík. Their progress can be monitored on mfbm.is (the website is in Icelandic). They also have a page on Facebook for their initiative, called “Medan faeturnir bera mig” (“While my legs can carry me”).

All funds raised will go towards Styrktarfélag krabbameinssjúkra barna, a charity supporting children with cancer and their families.
