Ring Road One in Southeast Iceland between Freysnes in the west and Jökulsárlón in glacial lagoon in the east has just been reopened. The stretch of the road in South Iceland from Seljalandsfoss waterfall in the west to Vík í Mýrdal in the east reopened earlier this morning.
Strong gale conditions led to the road closure yesterday. Even though the Ring Road has been reopened, it’s still very windy in South and Southeast Iceland, and the Icelandic Road Administration advises people not to travel through there in campers, because of their light weight.
The Red Cross opened an emergency shelter in Vík í Mýrdal yesterday, where stranded travelers were able to stay overnight. More than 50 foreign tourists sought shelter there, according to RÚV. Most of them had planned a daytrip from Reykjavík and got stranded when the Ring Road was closed.
The stormy weather is expected to continue in the southeast today, and the windiest conditions are forecast for the East Fjords tomorrow, along with increasing precipitation.
