Approximately 120 persons had to spend the night in Laugarbakki and Reykir in Northwest Iceland as Ring Road 1 across Holtavörðuheiði mountain pass was closed due to blizzard conditions yesterday. The road is still closed but the situation is being reassessed.
Search and rescue volunteers picked up people from cars that were stuck on the mountain pass and drove them to Laugarbakki and Reykir between 7 and 8 pm last night, ruv.is reports.
Originally, it looked as if even more people would be stranded there but some drivers decided to take the alternative route across Laxárdalsheiði.
Brattabrekka, leading from Borgarfjörður to Dalir in West Iceland, is also impassable, as are most mountain passes in the West Fjords. The roads are being cleared.
Today, the weather will be calm but the Icelandic Met Office has issued another strong gale warning of more than 20 m/s for all parts of the country tomorrow.
