According to Reykjavík City planning documents, the city’s population is expected to increase by at least 25,000 over the next 18 years, and around 14,500 apartments, about 800 per year, will be built to meet the demand.

Development will target the area west of Elliðaá river, as well as the area near Vatnsmýri, Frettablaðið reports.

Vice-chairman of the planning committee, Hjálmar Sveinsson, says that actions will be taken to reduce the expansion of the city outwards and instead focus on condensing the new areas for development. The hope is that this plan will reduce the cost of services, such as the maintenance of roads, which currently total over 1,000 kilometers in the capital area.
