Reykjavík Winter Festival Opens Tonight

The seventh annual Winter Festival opens in Reykjavík tonight with a march in Skólavördurholt in the city center. This year’s theme is light and movement which is reflected in various events held throughout the festival, which ends on Saturday.

People are encouraged to participate in the march tonight and to wear costumes to create a carnival-esque atmosphere. Dancers wearing special light-bulb costumes will be in attendance and preschoolers have prepared light-inspired spectacles around the city.

The festival ends with a hike up Mt. Esja overlooking the capital in the twilight on Saturday. Those interested in joining the hike assemble at the foot of the mountain at sunset, 6 pm. Hikers will wear miners’ hats to light up the dark.

The highlight of the Winter Festival is the fourth annual Night of the Museums when museums in Reykjavík offer free admission and keep their doors open until 1 am on Friday night. They have prepared special exhibitions and surprise events for the occasion.
