Reykjavík University Among the World’s Top 100 Young Universities

Reykjavík University ranks among the top 100 ‘Young Universities’ worldwide according to the new rankings published by Times Higher Education (THE). The rankings “list the world’s best universities that are aged 50 years or under.” This year’s rankings include 250 universities, up from 200 in 2017.

Reykjavík University is ranked 89th in this year’s Young University rankings. The ranking was determined based on an overall score (on a scale from 1 – 100) that was derived when the scores each university achieved for factors such as Citations, Industry Income, International Outlook, Research, and Teaching were averaged together. In these sub-categories, Reykjavík University earned the highest marks for Citations (79.1) and the lowest for Teaching (19.6). Its overall score was 42.1.

“This is a great result and a major international recognition of the quality of our work at [Reykjavík University]” wrote rector Ari Kristinn Jónsson of the rankings. “Employees, students, and everyone who has contributed their part can be very proud of how far we’ve made it in such a short time. Ever since [the university] was established, we’ve emphasized good teaching and intensive collaborations with the business world, then we built up intensive international research projects at [the university]. As such, there’s a great deal of work and development that are behind this recognition and it contains an incitement to continue to strengthen the university and nurture our students, the economic realm, Icelandic society, and our international research work even more.”

The top three Young Universities this year are: Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (China), École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland), and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). THE has also issued a World University Rankings; in these, Reykjavík University’s specific ranking isn’t given, but it fell within the 401 – 500 bracket, along with institutions such as the University of Oklahoma in the US, The Open University in the UK, and Qatar University in Qatar.
