Reykjavík Tops Green City List

Reykjavík is in first place on a ranking of 50 cities on the amount of green space per resident. According to the list, Reykjavík has nearly 411 square metres of green space per resident. This is over 100 times more than the least green city on this list, Tokyo, whose residents only enjoy 4 square metres of green each. RÚV reported first.

The list was compiled by Dutch travel website TravelBird, which hand-picked 50 global destinations which were popular “city break destinations.” The study measured natural and man-made green spaces as well as farms within the limits of each city. Reykjavík’s measurement includes part of Heiðmörk nature reserve and Esja mountain which is located in the Kjalarnes district and therefore technically within Reykjavík city limits.

If the green space within cities is taken as a percentage of the cities’ overall area, however, Reykjavík falls to 37th place.
