Reykjavík Ski Resorts Open on Weekend

The capital area ski resort of Skálafell is scheduled to open this weekend. According to Morgunblaðið, staff has been working throughout January to prepare for the opening.

The resort was open last year but not two years prior to that.

The nearby ski resort of Bláfjöll will continue to be open but the resort has only been open for 21 days since December 6 due to windy conditions rather than a lack of snow. There is usually more snow in Bláfjöll than Skálafell and the latter resort is also more exposed to sunshine.

Director of the ski areas Magnús Árnason said that if attendance is low over Easter, which falls early this year, then it will not be viable to have two ski resorts open near the capital through April.

Around 2,500 people visited Bláfjöll on Easter Sunday 2012, and a total of 57,942 overall last winter.
