Bláfjöll, the Reykjavík ski resort, opened yesterday, the first day of operation this year. Most ski lifts were open and approximately 4,000 visitors seized the opportunity to slide down the resort’s slopes in powder snow.

Einar Bjarnason, operating director of Bláfjöll was pleased with the situation. “Days like this make life worth living and that’s why I’ve lasted in this job,” he commented to ruv.is.
Bláfjöll has lacked snow in the past years and last autumn Mayor of Reykjavík Jón Gnarr even suggested the ski resort be closed down.
However, now it is snowing like never before—in the past few days Iceland’s capital region has seen a fair amount of snowfall.
The ski resorts in Mt. Hlídarfjall by Akureyri, Mt. Tindastóll by Saudárkrókur and Oddsskard near Eskifjördur were also open yesterday.
