Reykjavík Ski Area Opens

The Reykjavík ski resort in the Bláfjöll mountains opened yesterday for the first time this winter. More than 2,000 people went skiing and snowboarding in the five slopes which could be opened—many more than expected.

“The first day was incredibly successful, many more people came than we dared hope for,” managing director of the capital region ski resorts, Magnús Árnason, told Fréttabladid. He said the popularity of skiing in Iceland is on the rise.

Árnason said there are plans to establish snow machines in Bláfjöll. Originally, Reykjavík Energy was going to finance the purchase but the banking collapse prevented their investment plans.

However, the idea has not been aborted altogether, Árnason said. “It is not a question of if but rather when we will start producing snow.”

Meanwhile, the Akureyri ski resort in Mt. Hlídarfjall in north Iceland is looking at a 50 percent increase in visitors compared to last season, Morgunbladid reports.
