Reykjavík School Evacuated Due to Bomb Threat

Around 1,000 people were made to evacuate Borgarholtsskóli high school in the Reykjavík suburb of Grafarvogur at noon yesterday after the school’s office received a bomb threat. The threat then turned out to be a hoax.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested, suspected of having made the phone call to the school’s office about the false bomb threat, Fréttabladid reports.

The suspect is not a student but has a student friend. The man, who is well known by the police, was too intoxicated to be questioned immediately after the arrest.

A team of police officers, ambulances and a fire truck were dispatched to the scene. Bomb experts from the Icelandic Coast Guard then thoroughly searched the school for a bomb but didn’t find any explosives.

Chief Constable Geir Jón Thórisson said police consider such a hoax very serious since it is designed to frighten people. It could have severe consequences for the caller, Thórisson stated.
