The Icelandic Supreme Court has ruled that a roughly 8.000-hectare area, including Bláfjöll, Þríhnúkar, Vífilsfell and Sandskeið, belong to the town of Kópavogur. Morgunblaðið reports.
Municipalities in the capital area have been debating ownership of the area for a number of decades. The court‘s ruling means that the city of Reykjavík will have to relinquish approximately 3.000 hectares of land that was under its general zoning plan.
“This is a joyous day for residents of Kópavogur,” Ármann Kr. Ólafsson, mayor of Kópavogur told Morgunblaðið. The town of 33.000 is situated right next to Reykjavík. “I think this is the most important ruling that has been made for Kópavogur ever since I began dealing with municipal politics. We’re very happy to be finally done with this matter.”
