Reykjavík Pride 2014 Begins

The 16th annual Reykjavik Pride, formerly called Reykjavík Gay Pride, begins today. Up to 100,000 people are expected to attend the festival.

Today’s program includes beach volleyball and a BBQ at Nauthólsvík geothermal beach in Reykjavík at 5 pm.

Tomorrow evening, members from Styrmir Sports Club will showcase their diving techniques at Sundhöllin swimming pool.

On Thursday evening, the Reykjavík Pride Opening Ceremony will be held at Harpa Concert Hall and on Friday the Queer Cruise sets sail from Reykjavík at 10 pm, returning later in the evening for a party a Kiki bar.

The festival’s main event, the parade, begins at 2 pm from Vatnsmýrarvegur, close to BSÍ bus terminal, and ends at Arnarhóll in the city center.

Reykjavik Pride has been held in Reykjavik every year since 1999, but the festival’s history goes back to 1993 when Icelandic gays and lesbians first gathered in the city center demanding freedom and human rights.
