Reykjavík Prepares for Summer with Spring Cleaning

Reykjavík City authorities encourage residents to participate in cleaning the city’s districts this weekend by picking up rubbish in the vicinity of their homes. The city’s employees will collect the trash bags on Earth Day, April 22.

The initiative, called ‘One black trash bag’ is held in relation with the current Green April environmental awareness month, in which some other municipalities will also take part.

Black trash bags can be picked up for free at Olís gas stations, which the company donates to the initiative, as stated in a press release.

Mixed rubbish can go into the bags but biological waste from gardens should be taken separately to a Sorpa recycling station.

It is hoped that neighbors will join hands in the initiative and pile the bags in one location in their neighborhoods where they can be picked up.

It’s time for spring cleaning in homes and gardens and city authorities also encourage residents to prepare the city for summer. The official first day of summer is April 25.

Photos from the initiative can be shared on the city’s Facebook page.
