Reykjavík Multicultural Day Coming Up

The seventh Reykjavík Multicultural Day will take place this Saturday, May 9. The program kicks off at 1 pm with a parade from Hallgrímskirkja, the Reykjavík landmark church, down Laugavegur and on to the City Hall.

The festival includes various activities and events, such as an exhibition at the City Hall with food, arts and crafts from different parts of the world. At Tjarnarbíó, the old theater by the Reykjavík Pond, dance, music and other performances, including Lithuanian song, Thai dance, Bulgarian dance, Brazilian Capoeira and from local circus Sirkus Íslands, are scheduled from 2:30-5 pm. Entertainment will also be on offer at Iðnó from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, including a theater performance and performance by a local French harmonica group.

In celebration of this year’s Multicultural Day, a series of lectures will take place at Reykjavík City Library at Tryggvagata 15 over the next few weeks. The program includes lectures about multiculturalism and the daily life of the Bosnian Roma population in Rome, the housing situation among Polish immigrants in Reykjavík, and stereotypes and cultural integration of Asian women in Iceland.
