Reykjavík Mayor Considers Running for Parliament

Mayor of Reykjavík Jón Gnarr is considering running for parliament in the election next spring as he stated during an open Q&A session on reddit.com yesterday. “I have thought about it a lot. I actually believe I might make a good prime minister,” Jón said.

Some members of Jón’s party, the Best Party, will run under the name Björt framtíð in the 2013 parliamentary election, but Jón has also been associated with a new party founded by MP Birgitta Jónsdóttir, Píratapartíið, Fréttablaðið reports.

Jón, an actor and standup comedian, made world headlines when he was elected Mayor of Reykjavík in 2010 after a campaign which started out as, or many people considered to be, a joke. His victory guaranteed many other artists a seat on the City Council.

Support for the Best Party has since decreased.
