Reykjavík International Film Festival Begins

The fourth annual Reykjavík International Film Festival (RIFF) kicked off Thursday and will feature a variety of films in ten different categories, including “Open Sea,” “Human Rights: Iraq” and “Icelandic Panorama.”

The program includes the critically-acclaimed Sigur Rós concert film Heima (“At Home”).

This year Welsh artist and film director Peter Greenway will receive Riff’s Honorary Award for Directing, as announced on RIFF’s website,, this week.

RIFF has grown in popularity and size every year since it was first held by a group of film enthusiasts and people from within the film industry in Iceland in 2004.

Their purpose was to establish a festival that would spark an increase in local cinema culture and also create a noticeable international event.

The even will last until October 7.
