Reykjavík to increase safety in city center

Mayor of Reykjavík Vilhjálmur Th. Vilhjálmsson said after a meeting with police authorities and club owners yesterday that safety in downtown Reykjavík would be increased with more visible police officers and CCTV cameras.

They also discussed shortening the hours of night clubs on weekends, but the mayor said such changes would not take place now and not without the cooperation of club owners, Bladid reports.

Vilhjálmsson said city authorities were prepared to allocate more funds for the police both during weekends at night and during daytime.

The mayor said that by joining forces Reykjavík City, police and club owners wanted to ensure that normal pedestrians could walk through the capital without being harassed.
