Nearly every hotel in the capital area was fully booked on Sunday night, leaving travelers who’ve been stranded in Iceland because of inclement weather without a place to stay, RÚV reports. All afternoon flights from Keflavík were cancelled, meaning that huge numbers of tourists had to spend at least one additional night in the country.
As of Sunday afternoon, many hotels were still trying to determine what their availability would be in the evening. “We’re completely full here, just like at all the other Icelandair hotels, and what with the weather the way it is today, there’s definitely going to be some uncertainty today,” explained Birgir Guðmundsson, the hotel manager at Reykjavík Marina Hotel. “As it is right now, we’re just figuring out who the people are who maybe won’t be arriving at the hotel because their arriving flights have been cancelled. So, like I say, there’s definitely going to be some uncertainty throughout the afternoon, but more often than not, these situations are resolved as the day goes on.”
“Obviously, [tourists] weren’t happy about the situation,” said Dorota Kosela, an employee at Hotel Reykjavík, in an interview with RÚV. “But we could speak with most people and try to book them into other places, and we could eventually help them reschedule their trips for the following days.”
