A new project being carried out by the Reykjavík City Council aims to encourage more people to use the Reykjavík harbor area. Instead of trying to change the harbor, the project aims to show people the existing qualities of the area.

A new path from Harpa concert and conference hall to the Vík area of the harbor, designed by Massimo Santanicchia, Ragnar Már Nikulásson and Mattia Gambardella, unveiled at this year’s Culture Night, aims to show people that they can walk along the harbor, according to project manager Hildur Gunnlaugsdóttir.
“Most people come for specific places at the harbor but do not think of walking along it and certain barriers make it uninviting. Graphics on the ground and flags [now] guide people through the harbor and make the trip more inviting,” she explains.
The construction of an outdoor training facility is also underway in cooperation with Mjölnir martial arts club and Stáss Design. It is hoped that the project will bring life into one of the most neglected parts of the harbor.
