Reykjavík Gay Pride 2013 in Photos

An estimated 60,000 people gathered in downtown Reykjavík to watch the 39 floats in this year’s Gay Pride parade on Saturday, ruv.is reports.

The parade was unusually political this year, with participants protesting the arrest of Wikileaks whistleblower Bradley Manning—Wikileaks spokesperson Kristinn Hrafnsson was among the protestors—and countries where gay rights is lacking, including Russia where a law was recently introduced banning propaganda for homosexuality.

Reykjavík mayor Jón Gnarr stated last month that he wants to formally revise or break off the capital’s political and cultural relations with Moscow over the Russian capital’s stance on gay rights.

As in previous years, the mayor dressed in drag, this year in Iceland’s traditional costume for women. U.S. ambassador Luis Arreaga participated in the march along with embassy staff, as did Canadian ambassador Stuart Wheeler along with his husband.
