Reykjavík Football Club KR Wins Iceland Cup

Reykjavík football club KR won the Iceland Cup for the 11th time in the club’s history with a 1-0 victory over Fjölnir (another Reykjavík football club) at Laugardalsvöllur stadium on Saturday. With this 11th victory KR becomes the club to have won the cup more often than any other club in Iceland.

“It was as we had expected, a tough game for us. We knew Fjölnir would stay at the back of the field and try quick and sudden offensive play and we were determined to prevent that,” KR’s manager Logi Ólafsson told Fréttabladid.

The game got off to a slow start. After a few unsuccessful shots at goal in the latter half of the game the winning goal was scored by Óskar Örn Hauksson in the 89th minute, although technically it was an own goal since the ball bounced off Kristján Hauksson of Fjölnir and into the goal.

In the last minutes of the game Fjölnir fought aggressively, but in vain.

The playing conditions were not particularly good on Saturday because of the early snowfall. Around 24 hours before the game the stadium was covered in a 10-centimeter blanket of snow and stadium employees, members of the Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ) and employees of the golf courses in the capital region had to hand-shovel the field to prevent damage to the grass.
