Reykjavík Emergency Department Extra Busy

The emergency department at Landspítali National University Hospital in Reykjavík has experienced a spike in traffic in recent days due to a peak in flu cases as well as accidents due to icy conditions.

The hospital’s board of directors took the decision yesterday to postpone coronary angioplasty operations today and to transfer people from the emergency department to other departments.

The situation is said to be not as bad today as it was yesterday when almost twice as many patients sought treatment than on an average day, reports.

Hospital staff ask people who do not require urgent treatment to visit their local healthcare center or the after-hours healthcare center in Kópavogur. Individuals who are seriously ill or have had an accident which requires immediate attention are however encouraged to continue to seek treatment at the emergency department.
