The Reykjavík club Fram claimed the Iceland cup in women’s handball after a 25-22 victory against Valur, also from Reykjavík, in the capital’s Laugardalshöll arena on Saturday. However, in the men’s cup, Valur beat Akureyri from north Iceland 26-24.
In men’s handball, Valur claimed the cup for the third time in four years. Many had considered Akureyri more likely to win as the team has been the strongest in the league this winter. However, the team did not measure up on Saturday, Morgunbladid reports.
In women’s handball, Fram is the most successful team, having won the cup for the 14th time. In 2010, Fram also beat Valur for the cup but Valur defeated Fram in the league.
“Last year it was a good sign for us to lose against Fram in the handball cup final. Hopefully it will be the same this year,” Valur’s captain Hrafnhildur Ósk Skúladóttir commented.
