Reykjavík Club Icelandic Champion in Football

kr-logoReykjavík club KR earned its 25th Icelandic Championship title in football by beating Fylkir, also from Reykjavík, 3-2 last night. KR actually won the first ever Icelandic Championship in 1912 and the Iceland Cup earlier this season.

There is still one round left of the championship but no team can earn more points than KR at this stage and therefore there was a celebration for players and supporters at the club’s headquarters in Frostaskjól in the west of Reykjavík after the game, Morgunbladid reports.

Although it is clear who won the Pepsi league, it is not yet clear who will drop out of the league along with Víkingur from Reykjavík, who rank last and can no longer escape relegation.

The other teams in danger of being relegated are Fram from Reykjavík, Thór from Akureyri and Grindavík and Keflavík from the Sudurnes region.

The next few games will determine which teams will play for the Icelandic Championship title in the Icelandic premiere league next year.
