Reykjavík City Greenlights New Road as Tunnel

Reykjavík City Council accepted plans to construct a tunnel for the new road Sundabraut, between the capes Gufunes and Lauganes and underneath Videyjarsund channel, provided it passes environmental impact assessment.

Another option would be to construct the road across islands on the channel, connecting them with bridges, which the Icelandic Road Administration favors because it is less expensive. But inhabitants of Grafarvogur and Laugardalur districts are against those plans, reports.

Both Reykjavík City and the Icelandic state will fund the construction of Sundabraut. The profits from the sale of national telecom company Síminn has already been earmarked for the project.

Reykjavík City Council made Mayor of Reykjavík Dagur B. Eggertsson responsible for promoting the Sundabraut tunnel solution at future meetings, and Eggertsson is confident that the state as well as the road administration will come to terms with that solution.
