As of January 1 next year, the Reykjavík bus company Straetó, will add Borgarnes and the Hvalfjördur region to its list of destinations, if an agreement is reached between Straetó and the municipalities in the southwestern corner of west Iceland.
The plan is to establish a transfer station at the northern end of the Hvalfjördur tunnel where one bus will drive to Akranes (a route already in place) one to Borgarnes and one to the Hvalfjardarsveit rural area, Morgunbladid reports.
According to Páll S. Brynjarsson, head of Borgarbyggd municipality (one of the areas in question), the idea of bus routes between Reykjavík and these regions in west Iceland is still under development, but hopefully there will be at least 35 bus rides to Borgarnes per week.
The drive to Borgarnes takes about 45 minutes and some local residents drive to the capital every day for work.
