The 28th Reykjavík Arts Festival opens today with a new work by singer and composer Högni Egilsson, performed in part with church bells in the city center and conducted by the artist himself.
Turiya will unite Reykjavík’s two landmark churches, the Catholic Cathedral in Iceland and Hallgrímskirkja church which will play a central role in the performance. This approximately 15-minute long work will sound throughout the city center but it is best enjoyed by the Reykjavík Pond.
Högni regularly composes for and performs with Icelandic bands Hjaltalín, Gus Gus and Gluteus Maximus.
Other events at this year’s festival include performances by Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili, Welsh bass-baritone opera singer Bryn Terfel, the International Contemporary Ensemble and Anna Þorvaldsdóttir, a film by Matthew Barney and Jonathan Bepler and an exhibition by Icelandic photographer RAX.
