The unusually icy streets of Reykjavík are affecting its inhabitants in various ways. In some preschools, children have not been allowed out to the playground for the past few weeks due to ice, much to the parents’ dismay.

One of these preschools is Laugarsól in Reykjavík’s 105 district. “Due to the magnitude of the ice, we simply can’t risk letting the children outside to play,” its principal Helga Alexandersdóttir told vísir.is.
Laugarsól’s entire playground has been covered with ice. Workers from the municipality have repeatedly tried to spread sand over it but it simply comes off.
“This is the status here and I know that this is also the case at other preschools. No children have been injured here but this is still a difficult matter to deal with. We have done everything we can. I only hope that the situation will improve; in fact the ice has been subsiding a little in the past few days.
Understandably, the parents are quite unhappy with the situation. But it’s just beyond our control.”
