Sundhöllin, the oldest public bath in Iceland, will be open to visitors on December 3rd after lengthy renovations. The Reykjavík pool, which first opened in 1937, was designed by Icelandic architect Guðjón Samuelsson, best known for designing Hallgrímskirkja church, whose tower can be seen from the swimming pool.
Renovations at Sundhöllin consisted in building a new 25-metre outdoor pool (there was previously only an indoor one), a new reception area, and new women’s locker room, as well as renovating the existing men’s locker room and making the facilities accessible.
The new outdoor area consists of a 25-metre pool, a shallow wading pool, two hot tubs, and a steam bath. The outdoor area is walled-in on all sides and should, therefore, provide shelter from the Icelandic weather.
