To Return or Not to Return Home?

A total of 150 Icelandic citizens are currently enrolled in undergraduate studies in medicine abroad, according to a response by the Minister of Education Illugi Gunnarsson to a question by chair of the Parliamentary Budget Committee Vigdís Hauksdóttir.

Illugi does not think that conditions such as paying a higher interest rate should be implemented on loans to individuals who do not plan to return to Iceland after graduation, ruv.is reports. In response to Illugi’s comments, Vigdís said that there are many students who have received a loan but who will never return home.

In September it was reported that half of students in the University of Iceland’s faculties of medicine, nursing, physical therapy and radiology have considered leaving Iceland immediately upon graduation.
