A man responsible for rescuing another out of a burning vehicle, and who was himself injured in doing so, is not entitled to insurance compensation. Vísir reported yesterday on the insurance complaints board’s ruling.
On November 24, 2015, two vehicles collided in Ljósavatnsskarð pass in North Iceland. Following the collision, one of the vehicles caught fire. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, in part due to a driver who reacted swiftly at the scene of the accident, pulling the injured driver out of his burning vehicle before it all went up in flames. During the rescue, the driver of the burning vehicle grabbed the other man’s hand, causing a right shoulder injury.
The insurance complaints board ruled that the injury can be traced back to the driver and not to a fault related to the vehicle itself, such as its use, malfunction or flaw. As a result, he is not entitled to compensation from the vehicle’s liability insurance.
