Rescue Workers on Stand-By

ICE-SAR rescue workers are on stand-by today as a violent gale hits Iceland. Þorsteinn Gunnarsson, public relations officer for ICE-SAR, hopes people will avoid all necessary travel today.

“We did part of our preventive work for tourists yesterday,” he told RÚV. “We sent out weather warnings to almost 3,000 companies in the travel industry all over the country, which they could print out and post. This is part of informing the travel service and making it easier for them to distribute information to their customers. It’s part of the Safe Travel project.”

All domestic flights have been canceled for today, with Air Iceland, Eagle Air and Norlandair.
