Rescue workers from Hella, Hvolsvöllur and Vík í Mýrdal , South Iceland, were called out to Hrafntinnusker mountain this morning to assist hikers in trouble, according to a press release from ICE-SAR. About 20 people were sent out to assist the people.
A couple sent out an emergency signal through a SPOT satellite messenger early this morning. They were located on the hiking route called Laugavegur, which connects Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk, close to Hrafntinnusker mountain.
The people have just been found alive and well. They appear not to have been prepared for the deep snow on the hiking route. Since they are very cold, they will be taken to a mountain hut in the area.
ICE-SAR points out that this illustrates the importance of carrying some sort of emergency messenger system and leaving a travel plan. Such a plan can be turned in on the website safetravel.is.
