Rescue of Pearl Failed

Efforts failed yesterday to save the sand pump vessel Perlan (Pearl) from the bottom of Reykjavík Harbor where it sank Monday, RÚV reports. One of its owners believes there’s a 50 percent chance the ship is damaged beyond repair.

Workers attempted to pump seawater out of the ship yesterday afternoon, but repeatedly encountered problems with leakage. Finally at 10:30 pm, when windows on the ship burst, they decided to halt their efforts. By then, divers had been at work since 8:00 am.

Þorsteinn Vilhelmsson, chairman of the board of Björgun, the company which owns the ship, says damage to Perlan is clearly extensive. Still, he thinks the chances of being able to lift it from the harbor bottom are high.
