Repeated breakdown of Farice communications cable

Icelandic Broadcasting Service, RÚV, reports that the Farice underwater communications cable linking Iceland to the outside world has broken down 14 times since service was initiated in the beginning of 2004. The cable has been out of service from 30 seconds to 3 days, most interruptions last between 3 and 9 hours.

The minister of communications plans to present a memorandum to a government meeting today concenring Farice and back up communications links.

RÚV further reports that many companies have moved their hosted web services out of Iceland, including anti-virus expert Fridrik Skúlason, computer games company CCP, the search engine dohop and others.

Farice lies from Seydisfjordur to the Faroes and Scotland. Backed up by satellite transceivers, it provides the main communications link to and from Iceland.
