Repeat Criminals Abuse Rivotril

Repeat criminals arrested in the capital region abuse the drug Rivotril increasingly, police revealed. The drug is normally used to cure epilepsy and anxiety attacks but can be addictive and cause euphoria when taken in large quantities.

“People become addicted to the drug very quickly and do not hesitate to use violent threats or steal to be able to afford the next fix,” detective Adalsteinn Adalsteinsson told Morgunbladid.

“There is no doubt that my protégés use the drug in increasing numbers. This has become a very serious situation,” Adalsteinsson added.

Violators have often used the drug in cases of breaking-and-entering and assault, including a 15-year-old convicted last month for attacking a taxi driver.

It appears to be easy to obtain a prescription for Rivotril or buy it on the black market. It is less expensive than most other addictive medicine because the Social Security Institute in Iceland subsidizes it.
