A reindeer cow unexpectedly joined a herd of sheep that was being rounded up from the mountains in Mývatnssveit district in North Iceland Friday night, mbl.is reports. It followed the herd from an area close to Dettifoss waterfall. Reindeer are rarely seen in the area.
The animal was found to have passed sheep disease prevention borders.
Daði Lange Friðriksson, one of the shepherds, stated, “All of a sudden, we noticed the animal during the sheep roundup, and it was chasing a black ewe. You noticed that once it lost sight of the ewe, it searched for it. The sheep didn’t like the cow, except perhaps for the black one, which seemed to receive it better.” He added, “This is the first time I round up reindeer.”
Unfortunately, passing sheep disease prevention borders is a serious offense if you are a reindeer. A veterinarian passed down a sentence on Saturday. It was a death sentence.
