Reindeer Guides May Soon be Needed

Minister of the Environment Svandís Svavarsdóttir has declared that she wishes to offer a course for reindeer tour guides in the spring of 2011, ruv.is reports. It will have been ten years since the last course was held.

Independence Party MP Gudlaugur Thór Thórdarsson asked the Minister about the matter in parliament yesterday. The course is the responsibility of the Environmental Agency, which since 2001 has claimed that it wasn’t required.

Thórdarson pointed out that approximately 80 reindeer tour guides are currently operating in Iceland and obviously they weren’t getting any younger. Therefore, the need for a new course is great.
