A herd of 40 to 50 reindeer were found grazing on the football pitch in the East Fjords town of Djúpivogur yesterday.

Mayor of Djúpivogur Gauti Jóhannesson said the community was happy to receive a visit from the reindeer. “These are beautiful animals,” he commented to visir.is.
A herd of 180 reindeer were located on Road 92 in the narrow valley connecting Reyðarfjörður and Egilsstaðir last week, crossing back and forth over the road and posing a hazard to drivers.
East Iceland is the only area of the country where wild reindeer are found.
