Handicapped persons, single mothers, immigrants, the aged and the mentally disabled are the main groups afflicted by poverty in Iceland, according to a report published by the Icelandic Red Cross this weekend and which is covered in all the main media. Single men, many of whom are required to pay child support, are for the first time counted among those living in poverty. According to Sigursteinn Másson, chairman of the Icelandic Federation for the Handicapped, only radical changes to the welfare system will be able to amend the current situation.
