Records Broken at Keflavík Airport

A record 188 flights and 32,000 passengers went through Keflavík International Airport Sunday. Close to seven million passengers are expected to travel through the airport this year.

Guðni Sigurðsson, media relations representative for Isavia, the company that runs the airport, told Vísir, “Ten years ago, our busiest days included 70 flights a day. During the boom in 2006, there were 90 flights [a day].” He expects a few more days this summer to be as busy as Sunday.

Since 2006, the number of flights a day has more than doubled, but the number of passengers has increased even more, since the aircraft are larger than they used to be. “The planes take double the number of passengers they used to,” Guðni asserted.

In 2012, the busiest day included 97 flights, with the number gradually increasing since then, reaching a peak of 147 flights the busiest day last year.

“This has been an exceptionally fast development and everything has grown incredibly fast. Our colleagues at airports [in countries] around us are astonished over these numbers,” Guðni stated.
