The Road Traffic Directorate has revealed that 2005 was a record year for car sales, and was 60% more than the previous year. By December 16, almost 18,000 new cars had been sold, compared with 12,000 the previous year – which had also been considered a good year. Toyota cars were, as usual, the most popular, followed by Volkswagen. Interestingly, no Daihatsu or Isuzu cars were sold during the year, despite these cars being popular in the past here in Iceland.
Trade in used cars also boomed, with 95,000 cars undergoing a change of ownership during the year, equivalent to almost 400 every day.
