Record for weddings on July 7

An unusual number of couples plan to get married on July 7 this year, which bears the date 07.07.07, and priests believe this may be a new record. Some churches are booked from the early hours of the morning until late into the evening.

“This will be an incredible day,” sexton for Reykjavík Cathedral, Ástbjörn Egilsson, told Fréttabladid. Eight or nine couples plan to tie the knot there on July 7.

“We will begin at 9 in the morning and the last ceremony will be at 9 in the evening, so the stream of people will be fairly even all day,” Egilsson said.

At Grafarvogskirkja church, in Reykjavík suburb Grafarvogur, six or seven couples will be wed on July 7, from 10.30 am to 7 pm.

“I don’t think we have room for more ceremonies the same day if everything is to go smoothly,” said Rev. Vigfús Thór Árnason, the minister of Grafarvogskirkja.

Árnason said there had been many weddings on May 5, 2005, but he expected more to take place on July 7 this year, even a new record in the number of weddings in one day.
