Record Payment of Unemployment Benefits in 2009

The Directorate of Labor paid almost ISK 23.9 billion (USD 191 million, EUR 132 million) in unemployment benefits in 2009, which is by far the highest amount paid in unemployment benefits in Iceland in one year.

The directorate has yet to make more payments for 2009, but the total amount is not expected to increase significantly, according to Líney Árnadóttir, the managing director of the Directorate of Labor payment center, Morgunbladid reports.

Yesterday, a total of 16,340 individuals were registered as unemployed at the Directorate of Labor.
