Record Participation in Last Day of the Year Run

On December 31, 776 runners participated in the annual Last Day of the Year Run organized by Breidholt Sports Association in Reykjavík (ÍR), which is a new record. The run was first held in 1976 and was thus held for the 33rd time on Wednesday.

Weather conditions were fortunate, which is likely to have encouraged more people to join the race. The ten-kilometer race began on Kirkjustraeti in downtown Reykjavík. Runners then progressed through the western part of the capital, into the suburb of Seltjarnarnes and then back to the finish line by Reykjavík City Hall, ruv.is reports.

The winner of the men’s category was Kári Steinn Karlsson, who finished with a time of 32 minutes and 22 seconds. Karlsson won the race for the fourth year in a row. In the women’s category Arndís Ýr Hafthórsdóttir was the winner with a time of 37 minutes and 30 seconds.
