More than 20,000 students were enrolled to universities in Iceland at the beginning of the new term last week. This substantiates a record number of university students in Iceland, with enrollment up at all eight institutions of higher education in the country.
Last year there were 17,449 university students in Iceland. This year that number is up to 20,300, Morgunbladid reports.
Of these students, 13,600 enrolled in the University of Iceland (HÍ). Last year 9,586 students enrolled in HÍ and 2,241 in the Teachers’ University of Iceland, which has since been merged into one institution with HÍ.
The second-largest university in Iceland is Reykjavík University (RU) where almost 3,100 students enrolled this term. Last year they were 2,907. When the university first opened in 1998, 317 students were enrolled.
At the University of Akureyri enrollment is up by 60 students since last year with a total student body of 1,400. Almost as many students, 1,300, are studying at Bifröst University, up by 200 since 2007.
