The same amount of water is used for power plants Kárahnjúkavirkjun and Búrfellsvirkjun combined. The plants produce a total of 930 megawatts.

Ninety-percent of the water was used to heat houses and 10 percent for bathing, washing and other uses.

At the beginning of the month, when the temperature was several degrees over freezing point, hot water use in Reykjavík reached 10,000 tons per hour.
