Record-Breaking Lotto Winnings for Icelander

An Icelandic citizen took home tax-free winnings of ISK 162 million (EUR 1.1 million, USD 1.2 million) in Viking Lotto, which is held across eight countries in northern Europe, yesterday evening. This is the highest lottery winning taken home by an Icelander, according to the head of Icelandic lotto company Íslensk Getspá Stefán Konráðsson.

It was also the 24th time that an Icelander is the top winner in the lottery since it began in 1993. “But this is by far the largest [winnings],” he told ruv.is. He said that while he did not know the name of the winner that he or she was a subscriber and that in all likelihood did not yet know that he or she had won. Stefán said he would find out the person’s name later today and contact him or her.

The countries taking part in the lottery are Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Iceland.
